Kenyan churches attacked

5:04 am on 2 July 2012

Masked attackers have killed at least 17 people in two simultaneous attacks on Christian churches in a Kenyan town used as a base for operations against insurgents in Somalia.

At least 45 people were wounded in the simultaneous attacks on Garissa, in the north of Kenya.

Police said grenades and gunfire were used.

The attacks took place during morning sermons on Sunday. The first was at the AIC where two policemen outside were shot and grenades were thrown inside.

Members of the congregation were fired on as they sought to escape.

Two grenades were also thrown inside a Catholic church in the second attack. One failed to go off.

There have been a number of such attacks since troops were sent into Somalia last October to crush al Shabaab, which is blamed for kidnappings on Kenyan soil.
