Debutante wins first stage of Tour

There was a surprise winner of the first full stage of the Tour de France on Sunday.

First year rider Peter Sagan from Slovakia won the 198km stage in Belgium, outsprinting prologue winner Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland and Edvald Boasson Hagen of the Norway, AFP reports.

Cancellara retained the overall lead, seven seconds ahead of Bradley Wiggins of Britain.

Defending champion Cadel Evans of Australia is in 8th place, 17 seconds behind the leader.
