A new poll published on Monday in Australia says support for the carbon tax has fallen to a record low. Two thirds of Australians do not support the tax.

The Nielsen poll says two thirds of Australians do not support the tax, which came into effect on Sunday, the ABC reports.

The poll says support for the carbon tax has fallen four percentage points in the past month to stand at 33%, its lowest level since the tax was announced 15 months ago.

Some 62% of those questioned said they opposed the tax.

Politicians from both sides of politics are conducting a pitched battle over the tax.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has pledged that a Coalition government would repeal it.

On a two-party-preferred basis, the Coalition leads Labor 58% to 42%, representing a swing of eight points since the last election.
