Religious exemptions from conscription to end

9:19 pm on 9 July 2012

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has approved a plan to end exemptions from conscription for ultra-Orthodox Jews and Arab Israelis.

In February this year, the Supreme Court ruled that the law allowing exemptions so Ultra-Orthodox Jews can pursue religious studies, was unconstitutional.

It gave the government a deadline of August to come up with a revised law, the ABC reports.

The issue put a huge strain on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition.

Kadima, the largest coalition partner, threatened to quit unless the exemptions end. But ultra-Orthodox parties in the coalition were opposed.
