Bainimarama says voter registration can be extended

Fiji interim prime minister Frank Bainimarama says the voter registration process ahead of the country's planned general election in 2014 will be extended if needed.

The government has allocated eight weeks for the process, which started at the beginning of July.

Commodore Bainimarama told Auckland's Radio Tarana 84,000 people had been registered so far.

He says they are heartened by the numbers of young people registering.

There are an estimated 660,000 people of voting age in Fiji but Commodore Bainimarama says the eight weeks is only a guide and there'll be extensions if necessary.
