Elephant hunt causes Spanish king to lose WWF role

The Spanish branch of the World Wildlife Fund has voted to remove the Spanish king as the organisation's honorary patron after he went on an elephant-hunting safari in Botswana.

Members of the Spanish chapter voted overwhelmingly to scrap the position which had been occupied by King Juan Carlos since 1968.

The king went on the hunting holiday in April and was photographed posing next to a dead elephant.

The hunting trip was regulated under Botswana law but WWF in Spain says the king's participation made many of its members uneasy.

The trip also sat badly with the Spanish public struggling with an economic crisis that has left nearly one in four people unemployed.
