Fraud squad officers in Ireland have arrested former Anglo Irish Bank chief executive Sean FitzPatrick.

It is understood he was detained at Dublin airport.

He is the third person to be arrested this week in connection with an ongoing investigation into financial irregularities at the collapsed bank.

Two former senior executives Willie McAteer and Pat Whelan were charged on Monday with a string of fraud offences over a failed insider trading scam.

Mr FitzPatrick resigned from the bank after admitting he had failed to disclose up to 87 million euros in loans by moving them in and out of the bank every year for a period of eight years.
