In Japan, tens of thousands of people have marked the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
An American B29 bomber dropped the bomb on 6 August 1945, turning the city into a nuclear inferno and killing about 140,000 people.
At 8.15 on Monday morning - the time of the detonation - the toll of a bell set off a moment of silence.
About 50,000 people attended the official ceremony, while thousands of others joined demonstrations, forums and concerts as part of a rising tide of anti-nuclear sentiment, following the meltdown of the Fukushima reactor last year.
