Syrian refugee numbers increasing

11:30 am on 18 August 2012

United Nation agencies say refugees are fleeing Syria in ever greater numbers as the conflict between President Bashar al-Assad's forces and rebels intensifies.

The UN refugee agency says more than 170,000 refugees are registered in Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

Diplomats were due to meet at the UN in New York Friday to discuss what to do after the failure of peace efforts by UN / Arab League envoy Kofi Annan. The meeting has now been postponed.
