Chicago shootings

Nineteen people were shot in seven attacks on Thursday night in Chicago.

The BBC reports the trouble began around 4pm when four men were wounded on the west side.

Then 13 others were shot within a period of half an hour, including seven males and one female in a drive-by shooting on a single street.

Five more people were wounded in three other shootings around the same time.

Early on Friday morning, a teenager was shot in the back.

The number of homicides this year to date is 348, 29% above last year.

Over the Memorial Day weekend in May, 12 people were killed, and another 48 were wounded.
