The United States is to train Pacific people to help remove potentially dangerous materiel such as unexploded bombs and shells left over from World War II.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the plan at the Pacific Islands Forum in Rarotonga.
Mrs Clinton said $US2 million has been spent in recent years on the detection and destruction of materiel, and now another $US3.5 million will be spent.
The extra funds will be used in part to train island people to help remove ordnance.
