A silver medal from the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 was sold at auction on Monday for £25,000 at Christie's in London.

The BBC reports the medal was never awarded due to the cancellation of the boating events as a result of bad weather.

Gold medals were not presented until the 1904 Games in St Louis.

A gold medal from the first London Olympics in 1908 fetched £17,500 and an original London 1948 Olympic torch sold for £6,875.

The medals were part of a one-off auction held by Christie's to mark the London Olympics.
