Bomber at funeral

5:40 am on 5 September 2012

A suicide bomber at a funeral in eastern Afghanistan killed at least 25 people and wounded dozens of others on Tuesday.

The funeral was for a relative of the governor of Nangarhar province and the bomber struck while people were at the graveyard.

A statement by the ministry of the interior put the death toll at 20 for the attack and blamed the Taliban for bombing.

It said Governor Haji Hamesha Gul, who was probably the target of the attack, had been wounded. His son was among those killed.

The BBC reports there was recently an uprising against the Taliban in the area and the bombing is seen as a response to that.
