Security sources in Libya say an American employee at the US consulate in Benghazi is dead after gunmen stormed the building on Tuesday.
Reports say they were protesting against a US film regarded as insulting to the Prophet Muhammad, and set fire to the building.
Benghazi is the second largest city in Libya.
Earlier, protesters in Egypt breached the wall at the US embassy in Cairo and tore down a flag over the film.
