Deadly car bomb hits Thailand market

1:38 pm on 22 September 2012

At least six people have been killed and more than 40 injured in a car bomb explosion in southern Thailand.

The bomb exploded in front of a packed market in the Sai Buri district of the southern province of Pattani, the ABC reports.

It apparently went off when police arrived after a shooting was reported outside a jewellery shop, and caused a fire that gutted several shops.

Pattani has been in the grip of a separatist insurgency since 2004.

The insurgency has claimed thousands of Buddhist and Muslim lives in southern Thailand.
