Big flush in Bulawayo

10:57 pm on 25 September 2012

In Zimbabwe, many residents of the country's second city have simultaneously flushed their toilets, as part of an official attempt to prevent blocked sewerage pipes.

Bulawayo mayor Thaba Moyo says the "big flush" keeps pipes wet and prevents them from getting clogged.

Because of years of poor maintenance, and a recent severe drought, Bulawayo residents often lack running water for three days at a time, the BBC reports.

The synchronised flush will now take place twice a week, though flushing will still be permitted at other times too.
