Terror suspect shot by police in France

Updated at 10:10 am on 8 October 2012

Police in France have shot dead a suspect during an anti-terrorism raid in the northeastern city of Strasbourg.

Judicial and security sources said the raid, carried out about 6am on Saturday, was part of an investigation into a grenade attack on 19 September on a Jewish market in which one person was wounded.

Police officers were fired on after entering a fourth-floor apartment in the Esplanade district of the city and an officer was wounded by shots that hit his bulletproof vest and helmet.

Neighbours said that a couple had lived in the apartment with their two children for the past four to six months. The man was bearded and the woman wore a full-face Muslim veil.

Other raids were carried out Nice, Cannes and Paris, where one person was arrested.
