Papal words in Arabic

1:52 pm on 14 October 2012

Pope Benedict XVI spoke in Arabic for the first time during his weekly address to pilgrims at the Vatican.

"The Pope prays for all the Arabic-speaking people. May God bless you all," he said.

The Vatican said Arabic was introduced to express support for Christians in the Middle East and to remind all faiths to pray for peace in the region.

The event was broadcast live on television and radio.
