US navy cruiser and submarine collide

Updated at 5:26 pm on 14 October 2012

The United States Navy says a cruiser and a nuclear-powered submarine have collided during exercises off America's East Coast.

The navy says the cruiser's sonar dome has collapsed and there's possibly other damage, but no injuries.

The dome is a bulbous-shaped device on the bow of the ship beneath the water line.

A spokesperson declined to say exactly where the collision between the USS San Jacinto and the submarine USS Montpelier occurred.

The navy says there was no damage to the submarine's nuclear-powered propulsion plant and both vessels are operating under their own power.
