US - Iran nuclear negotiations denied

The White House on Saturday denied a report in The New York Times that the Obama administration had agreed to direct talks with Iran on its nuclear programme.

A National Security Council spokesman said in a statement the United States would continue to work with other members of the United Nations Security Council to resolve the issue.

The statement said the United States has stated from the outset that it would be prepared to meet Iran bilaterally - if the Iranians agreed.

The US and other Western powers say that Iran's nuclear programme is aimed at developing nuclear weapons, but Tehran insists it is for peaceful purposes.
