Church bombed in Nigeria

5:05 am on 29 October 2012

A suicide bomber drove a vehicle packed with explosives outside a packed Catholic church in Nigeria on Sunday killing at least seven people and wounding nearly 100.

The bombing happened in the northern city of Kaduna, at St Rita's church in the Malali neighbourhood.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility but the Boko Haram group has carried out similiar attacks.

The state governor has called for calm and went on the radio pleading for people not to retaliate.

In June three churches were attacked in the state of Kaduna, including one in the city. At least 50 people were killed in the bombings and subsequent reprisals.
