Another 62 people will be transferred to Christmas Island after a boat was intercepted north of Cocos Islands.

The vessel was detected by an RAAF maritime patrol aircraft on Friday.

AAP reports the passengers were taken to Cocos (Keeling) Islands for basic health and security checks.

They will be transferred to Christmas Island where the Department of Immigration & Citizenship will assess their reasons for travel.

Another asylum seeker boat was picked up by HMAS Albany on Thursday, west of Christmas Island.

Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said on Saturday that initial indications were that six people were aboard.

The federal government has warned that people arriving by boat without a visa since 13 August run the risk of being sent to processing centres on Nauru or Manus Island in Papua New Guinea.
