Cocaine from NZ seized in Algeria

Police in Algeria have seized 165kg of cocaine that came from New Zealand concealed in a container meant for powdered milk.

AAP reports the cocaine was hidden in a powdered milk container which was imported by ONIL, a company that dominates the Algerian market.

A security official told AFP was one of the largest seizures ever made there.

Algeria said last year that AQIM, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, was reaping large profits from trade in cocaine. The drug is distributed in Algeria and also exported to Europe.

Fonterra is trying to find out more details. It is on standby to provide any information required.

New Zealand is one of Algeria's major milk powder suppliers.
