Typhoon Son-Tinh arrives

8:10 am on 31 October 2012

Thousands of homes, farmland and power lines have been badly damaged in northern Vietnam by Typhoon Son-Tinh.

Aid officials say the storm is the biggest this year, with wind speeds in excess of 140km/hr.

The weather has been caused by a tropical cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. Fishermen in both India and Sri Lanka have also been warned not to go to sea.

The BBC reports more than 4000 people in Sri Lanka have been displaced and the storm is also threatening southern India.

A cyclone came ashore near the town of Pondicherry in southern India in December 2011. More than 30 people died and many homes were damaged.
