Pilot whales die in Tasmania stranding

10:30 am on 4 November 2012

Scores of whales have died in a mass stranding of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins on two islands off Tasmania's coast.

The largest stranding was on New Year Island where 60 whales and 20 dolphins beached on Saturday.

Only two of the whales survived the beaching, 14 dolphins died and the remaining six survived, the ABC reports.

Officers from Tasmania's Parks and Wildlife Service are investigating why the mammals beached and were returning to the site on Sunday to make sure none had stranded again overnight.

On Friday, 13 bottlenose dolphins stranded on King Island.

Officers say five were already dead, and they managed to rescue eight of them by pushing them back out to sea.

They will test the carcasses in a bid to find out what caused the strandings.
