New storm alert in New York

10:20 am on 7 November 2012

Parks and beaches in New York City will close on Tuesday for at least 24 hours as a new storm system approaches just over a week after Sandy hit the region.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says officials will try to evacuate residents from some low-lying waterfront neighborhoods again.

The evacuations are designed to coincide with high tides when the storm surge would be highest.

However, he emphasised they will not be as widespread as the mandatory evacuations ordered before Sandy arrived.
