The death toll in Guatemala's earthquake has risen to about 50 and about 100 people are missing.

The United States Geological Survey said the 7.4-magnitude quake struck about 45km southwest of Champerico at a depth of 33km at 10.35am on Wednesday.

The dead were found in six towns in San Marcos department, located at the border with Mexico and some 250km west of the capital, AFP reports.

In the town of San Cristobal Cucho, 10 members of one family died when their house collapsed on top of them.

The quake levelled 131 homes and injured 155 people.

It was the strongest earthquake in Guatemala since a magnitude 7.5 quake in 1976 that claimed more than 20,000 lives.

No tsunami warning was issued.
