Coal company fined for excessive dumping

A coal mining company in Australia that dumped excessive amounts of waste rock at its operations in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales has been fined $A84,000.

The Land and Environment Court ordered Integra Coal Pty Ltd to pay the NSW Department of Infrastructure and Planning $A38,000 in costs.

Integra was granted approval in 2010 to operate open cut and underground mines with specified limits to the height of waste rock piles.

But AAP reports that inspections of the operations in August 2011 found waste rock dump heights significantly breached the limits in the development approval.
