The trademark bowler hat and cane used by Charlie Chaplin, one of the greatest stars of Hollywood's silent movie era, have been sold for $US62,500.

They were part of a range of entertainment memorabilia auctioned in Los Angeles.

The cane is inscribed CCLT (Charlie Chaplin Little Tramp), a reference to his slapstick Little Tramp character, who starred in dozens of films from 1914.

The hat is made of black felt and the cane of bamboo.

Both items are said to be in remarkable condition, and went to an undisclosed bidder.
