Police in Rio De Janeiro have arrested eight people, including the president of a supporters group for Brazil's biggest football club Flamengo, in connection with the murder of a rival fan.

Vasco Da Gama fan Diego Martins Leal was found dead in the suburbs of Rio in August before a match between the two teams, AFP reports.

Weapons, drugs and 20,000 real in counterfeit bills were found in a raid at the headquarters of the 'Torcida Jovem' (young fans) club.

A computer that had pictures of fans from opposing teams, was also seized.

At the time of his arrest, club president Carlos Silva Santo was armed. Two others are still at large.

In a statement, Flamengo denounced all types of violence and took no responsibility for the actions of factions of its fan clubs.
