Red Cross mulling monitoring at Nauru

10:02 am on 24 November 2012

The Australian Red Cross is considering whether to monitor conditions inside Australia's offshore detention centre for asylum seekers on Nauru.

The ABC reports representatives from the agency have travelled there to see conditions for detainees first hand and have submitted a report to the federal government.

The Red Cross already independently monitors Australia's domestic detention network.

Spokesman Michael Raper said there were a number of factors to consider.

"It's not just a simple matter because we don't have a Red Cross in Nauru and we don't have relations with the Nauru government," he said.

"All of this will have to be established. We'll have to weigh it all up. There's enormous cost,'' he said.
