Russian court clears Madonna of 'moral damage'

A Russian court has dismissed charges by a group of activists accusing Madonna of causing them "moral damage" during the singer's concert earlier this year.

The plaintiffs demanded that she pay millions of dollars to compensate for alleged "gay propaganda among minors".

The court in Saint Petersburg cleared the American singer of all charges following a six-hour hearing, Radio New Zealand's correspondent in Moscow reports.

The group of nine plaintiffs and representatives of the Trade Union of Russian Citizens claimed over $US10 million for "moral damages suffered" during the concert in August.

They said her performance was "aimed at the formation of a distorted view of personal relations" and "damaged the institution of marriage and violated the social order".

The lawsuit was launched under a new law by the local authorities in March this year. It determines "public action aimed at promoting sodomy, lesbianism, bisexualism among minors" a criminal act.

The court adjourned late on Thursday and ordered each of the plaintiffs to pay $US600 compensation to the concert's organisers.
