The Australian Refugee Coalition says a 35 year-old asylum seeker on Nauru has been taken from the detention camp to hospital.

The Ahwazi Iranian has been on hunger strike for 28 days, and for the last few days has been refusing water.

The coalition told Radio New Zealand International it is believed he has kidney failure.

Spokesperson Ian Rintoul says before he left the camp, the refugee reiterated he was on a hunger strike to close the Nauru detention camp.

Mr Rintoul says another asylum seeker has refused to eat for 32 days, while a third man is in a Brisbane hospital after being evacuated on Friday, after being on a hunger strike 52 days.

Mr Rintoul says an estimated 25 asylum seekers are now refusing food and there have been several more incidents of self-harm.
