Elvis back for bushfire battles in Melbourne

2:00 pm on 7 December 2012

Elvis, a giant firefighting helicopter, is back in Melbourne for the summer fire season.

The Skycrane helicopter, which is leased from the United States, was greeted at Essendon airport on Friday by federal Attorney-General Nicola Roxon and state Deputy Premier Peter Ryan.

AAP reports temperatures in the mid-30s and high winds are predicted for much of the state of Victoria on Saturday.

Mr Ryan said Elvis was always a welcome sight in Victorian skies.

"This aircraft is extraordinary by any terms," he said. "It has become synonymous for many Victorians with our ability to fight fires."

AAP reports Elvis will be stationed at Essendon for the remainder of the summer fire season. A similar aircraft, Gypsy Lady, will arrive at Ballarat later this month.
