Strong quake hits off coast of Indonesia

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake has struck in the Banda Sea off Indonesia.

The US Geological Survey said the quake hit at 1.53am on Tuesday and was centred 236 kilometres northwest of the Tanimbar Islands at a depth of 158 kilometres.

No tsunami warning was issued, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement on its website.

The earthquake has been felt more than 600 kilometres away in Darwin, Australia.
