US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is working from home after fainting and sustaining a concussion.

In a statement on Saturday, the State Department said she had a stomach virus and became dehydrated and fainted.

At the recommendation of her doctors, "she will continue to work from home next week, staying in regular contact with (the) department and other officials," the statement said.

AAP reports Mrs Clinton, 65, cancelled a trip to North Africa last week due to illness.

The virus also hit other members of her staff, who were been with her on a European trip.
