Orion spots boat wreckage

5:16 am on 17 December 2012

A Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion on Sunday spotted two fishing boats while searching for ones that went missing off Samoa, with nine men onboard, in cyclone Evan.

One of the men, a 30-year-old skipper, has been found alive on the nearby island of Manono but has yet to be formally interviewed.

Maritime New Zealand says the Orion searched for five hours on Sunday morning and sighted two vessels - one on the island of Apolima and one south of the main island, Upolu.

It has emerged that the boat on Apolima is an older wreck and not connected with the storm.

The Rescue Coordination Centre says the search for eight missing fishermen will resume on Monday.
