White House talks on gun control

7:18 pm on 18 December 2012

Top level talks on gun control have been held at the White House in the wake of last week's mass shooting in Connecticut.

President Barack Obama met his deputy Joe Biden, three Cabinet colleagues and other senior officials.

A White House spokesperson say they have started looking at ways the country can respond to the tragedy in Newtown, in which 20 children and six adults were shot dead by a gunman.

The spokesperson gave no details, saying only that their work will continue.

New York's mayor, Michael Bloomberg, says that's not good enough.

He says words alone can not heal the nation; only actions can do so.

The first funerals of the shooting victims have taken place, of two six-year-old boys, Noah Pozner and Jack Pinto.
