The government of Tunisia is to sell by auction property that belonged to deposed President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and some of his relatives.

Among the items are nearly 40 luxury cars, including a Mercedes worth about $US2.5 million dollars.

Officials expect the sale to fetch more than $US12 million.

Social affairs minister Khalil Zaouia said the money will be invested invested in the country, but the sale also has symbolic value as another step in the revolution.
