9:18 am on 25 December 2012

Russia is carrying out major repair work on Lenin's mausoleum in Moscow.

The Kremlin said the body of Vladimir Lenin will also undergo preservation work.

The Lenin Mausoleum was constructed in 1924 just outside the walls of the Kremlin in Red Square. It has not seen any major works for 80 years.

The foundation is starting to tilt and is water-damaged. Work to eliminate the problem will take until April.

AAP reports a team of scientists periodically restores Lenin's body, when it is given a new suit and various preservation treatments.
