Budget row in Macedonia

3:01 pm on 25 December 2012

The opposition in Macedonia was ejected from parliament on Monday for brawling, prompting it to pledge to boycott the chamber in a row over the budget for 2013.

Social Democrats MPs blockaded themselves in the building on Sunday to stop the budget. Police had to separate their supporters from those of the ruling coalition outside.

The opposition says the budget will add to country's debt and has suggested around 1000 amendments to bring down spending.

The BBC reports they accuse the coalition of pushing for a vote on the budget before amendments have been considered.

Parliament has 120 members.

The government last monthproposed a 148 billion denari ($US3.2 billion) budget for 2013, and forecast a deficit of 3.5% of gross domestic product. It put growth next year at 2 percent of GDP.

But the opposition condemned the budget as profligate at a time of economic crisis and demanded cuts of about $US260 million.
