Police in China have rescued 89 children and arrested 355 people suspected of involvement in child trafficking.

The the public security ministry said officers from nine regions, including Fujian, Yunnan, Sichuan, Anhui and Guangdong, took part in a joint operation beginning on 18 December.

The Xinhua news agency reported on Monday the children are now in nursing homes and police are seeking their parents.

The ABC reports trafficking of children is a serious problem in China, due in part to the "one-child" policy which has put a premium on baby boys.

A healthy male infant bought for 30,000 yuan in poor provinces such as Yunnan can reportedly be sold for 70,000 - 90,000 yuan in Fujian and Guangdong, which are wealthier provinces.
