Christmas Day dippers

6:30 am on 26 December 2012

People of all ages took the plunge in the annual Christmas Day dip around Britain. Beaches in south Devon were among the locations.

At Exmouth, a rousing rendition of We Wish You A Merry Christmas was followed by a stampede of more than 1000 swimmers into the waves.

Many wore Father Christmas outfits. Some were dressed daleks and other fictional television characters.

"It wasn't as cold as I thought it would be," said Suzanne Sanders, from Crawley in West Sussex. "I didn't expect so many people, the atmosphere was just lovely."

Other swimmers took to the water in the Serpentine in Hyde Park in London.

Many events were used to raise cash for charity.
