Air pollution warning issued

1:33 pm on 2 January 2013

Air pollution in the Iranian city of Isfahan has reportedly reached emergency levels.

The BBC reports schools are closed and people have been advised to leave if at all possible. Isfahan has a population of 1.5 million.

Some analysts say that pollution has been worsened significantly by low quality of petrol and diesel fuel being used in Iran as Western sanctions prevent it from importing refined fuel.
