Sales of small water bottles banned

1:59 pm on 3 January 2013

The sale of bottled water in units smaller than one litre is banned in the town of Concord in Massachusetts, USA. The law came into effect on 1 January.

First offenders will get a warning. Anyone caught selling the banned bottles a second time will be fined $US25, and $US50 for further offences.

More than 90 universities in the United States have already restricted the sale of plastic bottles.

However, the BBC reports Concord has not introduced any restrictions on the sale of small bottles of other drinks and the bylaw has an exemption in case of emergencies.
