US provides $10 billion storm fund

11:13 pm on 5 January 2013

The United States Congress has approved nearly $US10 billion in disaster relief for the victims of "superstorm" Sandy.

The storm ravaged parts of the east coast, including New York and New Jersey, last October, but in recent days there has been an outcry over a delay in approval of taxpayer-funded relief.

The $US9.7 billion bill will prevent a flood insurance fund from running out of money by next week.

Democrat Steny Hoyer from Maryland and Republican Pete King from New York were among those who spoke in the House of Representatives.
