Nepal protest demands better protection for women

Hundreds of protesters in Nepal's capital of Kathmandu have demonstrated outside the Prime Minister's residence to demand better protection for women.

The demonstrations on Sunday mirror the outcry over a brutal gang rape and murder of a female student in Delhi that has galvanised many Indians.

The protesters, many of them women, chanted demands for justice in Kathmandu on Sunday as they highlighted acts of violence against women in Nepal.

They want more decisive action by the authorities, as well as tougher laws, the BBC reports.

Their campaign began 10 days ago after a young Nepalese woman said she was robbed by airport officials as she returned from working overseas.

She was then handed over to a policeman, she says, who also robbed her and then raped her.

The government has promised to investigate.
