Old prison wing to close

One of the oldest wings at Long Bay Jail in Sydney is to close.

The ABC reports the Metropolitan Special Programs Centre opened in 1909 and houses about 320 maximum security inmates.

Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Severin says he has decided to close the wing because it would require an investment of millions of dollars to bring it up to scratch.

He said an old block at Silverwater prison will be re-opened and inmates will also be transferred to a new maximum security wing opening soon in Cessnock.
