Fiji reverses decision to expel priest

Fiji's interim government has reversed its decision to expel an Australian Catholic priest.

The Minister for Immigration on Friday declared Father Kevin Barr a prohibited immigrant due to what he said was a breach in the terms and conditions of his work permit.

He was given until Sunday to leave Fiji, where he has worked for more than 30 years and had a long history of social advocacy.

Father Barr, 76, revealed recently that he was the subject of abusive communications from interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama.

The prime minister's office said the decision was reversed after representations were made on Father's Barr behalf.
