A boy from Auckland died from a gunshot wound in Fiji on Saturday evening.

Another boy, a student, aged 14, is in a critical condition at Lautoka hospital.

The six-year-old boy had gone to the site with a relative, who is the owner of the licensed gun, used for shooting wild goats and pigs.

Police say his parents and relatives were inspecting the house when they heard a gunshot and rushed to the vehicle where the gun was kept.

They found the injured children and rushed them to hospital, but the youngest was pronounced dead on arrival.

The gun owner is in police custody and officers have spoken to construction workers who were at the scene.
